Understanding Medicare

Medicare is a federal insurance program for people 65 years and older as well as individuals with certain disabilities or diseases.

You have a number of different ways to access Medicare benefits, and we’re here to help you sort through those options.

What is Medicare Part A? Part A
(Hospital Insurance)

This covers inpatient care in hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, hospice care, and some home health care (though some exclusions apply).

What is Medicare Part B? Part B
(Medical Insurance)

Part B covers physician and other practitioner services, including preventive services and second opinions, as well as medical supplies, ambulance transportation to the hospital, and some outpatient drugs.

What is Medicare Part C? Part C
(Medicare Advantage)

Offered by private approved companies, these plans combine the benefits of Part A and Part B and may include coverage for vision, dental, hearing, and health and wellness programs. Rules and out-of-pocket costs vary between plans.

What is Medicare Part D? Part D
(Prescription Drug Coverage)

Part D is an optional federal program that works with your Medicare or Medicare Advantage plan to reduce prescription drug costs. Different plans may cover different brand name and generic drugs with different levels of cost sharing.
