What is Coronavirus

Coronavirus is a respiratory illness that can spread from person to person. The virus that causes COVID-19 is a novel Coronavirus that was first identified during an investigation into an outbreak in Wuhan, China.

Current information shows that older adults and people with chronic conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, and lung disease, are at higher risk of getting very sick from this illness. Although it is possible for everyone, including young people, to be affected, your individual risk is low.

Watch for Symptoms

People with COVID-19 have had a wide range of symptoms reported – ranging from mild symptoms to severe illness.

Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. People with these symptoms or combinations of symptoms may have COVID-19:

  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

Or at least two of these symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Repeated shaking with chills
  • Muscle pain
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Purple or red bumps on toes, hands or feet

If you are experiencing these symptoms, or have any other unusual symptoms, contact your primary care doctor.

*Emergency warning signs include difficulty breathing, persistent pain or pressure in the chest, new confusion, or bluish lips or face. If you develop emergency warning signs for COVID-19 get medical attention immediately.

Take Precautions

The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. We strongly recommend the following:

  • If you have any flu-like symptoms, such as fever, a dry cough and/or shortness of breath, contact your Primary Care Doctor.
  • Take common-sense preventive actions to stop the spread of germs.
  • Practice social distancing (6 feet apart).
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a cloth face cover when around others.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home if you are sick, except to get medical care.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes and then immediately wash your hands.
